Do I Need to Move out During Roof Replacement?

Home improvements can disrupt your daily routine to some degree, from making you unable to use a part of the house for a few hours to having you evacuate for the project’s duration. In today’s post, local roofing contractor Quality One Roofing Inc answers a question asked of most roofers: do homeowners need to move out during roof replacement?

How Would Roof Replacement Affect Your Daily Routine?

It is entirely possible to stay at home during roof replacement; however, there are a few conditions that may make it more suitable for your family to stay elsewhere:

  • Noise. Roof replacement is inherently noisy because of hammering, power tools and installers moving back and forth. If you work from home, it may throw off your concentration or disrupt meetings. If you have pets or young children, the constant noise may be stressful for them.
  • Dust and debris. Like most kinds of remodeling projects, roof repair and replacement will make dust and debris a constant presence in its duration. Like noise, dust and debris will make your home unsuitable for pets and young children.
  • Safety risks. Roof replacement presents safety risks not just to the installers, but also to the house’s occupants. Discarded roofing material and misplaced tools can fall on anyone from unexpected places. Stray nails can fall into the yard where they can cause injury when stepped on. Unsupervised children may wander into work areas, which would put them at greater risk.

Should You Stay at Home During Roof Replacement?

Considering the factors described above, moving out during roof replacement may be your best option. Of course, you don’t have to move everything out of the house; roof replacement only takes a few days. There are situations where you may need to be on-site during installation, such as when you need to sign off on the cost of an emergency repair — moving to a remote cabin may not be a good idea. Instead, consider staying with relatives or checking in at a nearby hotel.
