Blistering Asphalt Shingles: What You Need to Know

Why Do Asphalt Shingles Blister?

There are two main reasons why asphalt shingles blister: 

  • Trapped moisture in the shingles. During the manufacturing process, moisture may become trapped within the shingles. When exposed to the sun’s heat, that moisture heats up, resulting in the appearance of small bubble-like protrusions on the shingle’s surface.
  • Lack of proper ventilation. Poor attic ventilation can speed up shingle blister formation. Without enough intake and exhaust vents, heat buildup inside the attic can “bake” the shingles above, causing blisters.

How Can You Prevent Shingles From Blistering?

The best way to prevent blistering is by installing high-quality asphalt shingles. Take note that blisters can pop when they are disturbed, even at the slightest impact during a roof repair or inspection.

Additionally, your attic should be properly vented. Otherwise, there’s a huge chance that you’ll deal with damaged insulation and increased energy bills during summer.
